Can you help make 120 “to-go” brown bag lunches? Can you participate in serving lunch and worshiping with the (mostly unhoused) congregation?

common cathedral is a congregation of (mostly) un-housed parishioners and worship service takes place every Sunday at Brewer Fountain on Boston Common. We will provide a bag lunch for the participants. The clergy who conduct the worship service and actively minister to the parish are extremely grateful to us for providing lunch.

Please prepare 20 sandwiches, wrapped or in ziploc baggie. Each brown lunch sack should have the sandwich and two or three snacks, for example a bag of chips and a banana, or a bag of nuts and a bag of popcorn. Try to choose soft snacks, like banana or goldfish crackers, over hard snacks, like apples, due to differences in dental situations. Please do take good precautions when preparing to-go lunch bags at home: sanitize surfaces, wash hands often and consider wearing gloves. You may use any kind of bread and your choice of snacks to include, no beverage (there is a separate distribution of beverages). Please write on the outside of the bag what kind of sandwich is inside. Paper napkin might be nice, too, and a smiley face or a message like “Jesus loves you!” is always appreciated. Past volunteers suggest that you need about 2 1/2 pounds of meat and 2 1/2 loaves of bread for 20 sandwiches. You can also help prepare the sandwiches in the St. Andrew’s kitchen in the morning.

Deliver your brown bags to the circle driveway outside our church no later than 11:10 am, and one volunteer will deliver the lunches to Boston. We also need someone to purchase 100 cups, a canister of lemonade mix, and a jug of grape juice, and deliver them at the same time.

We are also invited to help distribute the lunch bags and worship with the congregation. Arrive by 12:15, serve lunch 12:30 – 1:00, worship 1:00 – 2:15 then debrief with the ministers about the differences/similarities between attending a housed church and an unhoused church. I have often participated and find it to be uplifting and hopeful. (Cam M.)

St. Andrew’s has a budget for this ministry so please send your receipts to our church financial secretary for reimbursement. Thank you SO MUCH!
