Matthew: A Witness to Jewish Christians

The Gospel of Matthew is the most beloved gospel of the early church; that is why it is listed first in our New Testament. When the church was confirming which books belonged in Holy Scripture, Matthew was the most popular gospel.

There are many remarkable aspects to this gospel, but one important one is the way Matthew focuses on testifying to the new Christians who were Jews first. He is telling the Christian story to people who knew the Hebrew Bible and Jewish history well. His gospel is filled with references to the Old Testament which, for Matthew, foreshadow Christ and the emerging Christian story. Join us to learn about how Matthew recognizes Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of all the promises God made to the Jewish people in Hebrew Scripture.

We meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30am in the Harvey Room; our second class meets on the second Wednesday evening of each month from 7 to 8pm in Room 2. (downstairs) (During Lent [March] our Wednesday night group meets on the second Tuesday night of the month.)
